Our Storyboard
This is the storyboard me and my group made. It helped us stick to plan and prompted us as it reminded us of our camera angles when filming. It made is keep to a plan and made the filming process faster. Although, we could of added more description to help us to make our filming run smoother.
Memory check – a recap of things we have covered so far
Q1. What is ISO and what does it effect?
Ans. Controls the definition and detail.
(Need good light for good ISO. The higher the ISO, means not good lighting)
Q2. When would we use the ‘P’ control
setting on the camera mode dial.
Ans. Program- Automatically sets the
shutter speed and aperture.
Q3. Name two
important consideration when attaching the tripod baseplate to the bottom of
camera?
Ans. Make sure it is attached to the
camera securely so the camera does not fall and make sure it is attached the to
tripod to avoid breaking the camera. Also, make sure its on the right way
round.
Q4. Name three
important considerations when using a red-head lighting kit
Ans. Never touch the barn doors or the
bulb straight after using to avoid burns, never pack it away straight after
using as the bulb is hot and can break easy.
Q5. When focusing the camera, what do we
place on the object/subject to ensure it is the center of focus?
Ans. A green rectangle will appear over
the object or person that is in focus.
Q6. Name two techniques we can use to
adjust the brightness and contrast of a photograph?
Ans. The apature and the shutter speed. Or ISO.

Evaluation- Photography
So far in photography, i have learned what
each button means on the dials and etc. Though im still not quite sure what
some do, i will eventually learn and remember in the future as if have many
sheets explaining the button functions and so on.
I have also learned how to set up a tripod
successfully, how to carry it, and the many uses of it to create great effects
when taking photos. I now know how to successfully attach the base plate to the
camera and the tripod without damaging equipment.
Lighting is also important in photography
as I’ve come to learn as different lighting can create different effects on the
image. For example, if a picture is too dark it can be easily altered so that
it is a right level of brightness, but if the picture is too bright, the
picture cannot be used or altered darker to create a nice looking photo. In
addition, i have been introduced to many different lights such as redhead
lights (studio lights) and how to use one correctly without damaging myself or
the equipment itself. For example, If I was to touch the bulb, not only could
it burn me, but due to my hands having natural oil on them, it could get on the
bulb so when the bulb heats up again it is most likely going to burst.
So far i have learned different camera
techniques to give my photos a great effect, depending on what i want to take a
picture for and what for. For example, using a deep focus effect to blur out
the unnecessary parts of my photo to make the most important part of the image
pop out, or how to make it easier to edit a background so i can just get a
specific part of an image by using a seamless background.
Although I now know many different
techniques, when it came for me to take my own photos and create my own advert,
it didn’t quite match up with my proposal. But from this I can find my weaknesses
and learn from them so I know how to improve my skills when using a camera for
later on in the course.
But with the help of the other photos I found
on Google, it inspired me and gave me ideas for what to do for my advert and
how to make something so subtle, into something considered freaky or
unique.
However, to take the shots I needed I had
to take into account about the lighting difference and bringing in all the necessary
props I would need to create my advert.
This information i learned in photography
class will prove to be useful in the future as it will help with both my
advertising and my filming classes. Once i learn more about the cameras and how
to use them i can create good quality work in any type of media. However, i
still have a lot to learn about the settings and buttons and such.
Slogans
Here is a sheet full of slogans that were matched up to their company which i did in one of the very first lessons of collage. I wrote how each slogan was persuasive, and why the company chose that as their slogan. This will help me in the long run when it comes to me to decide what slogan will cause the most positive impact when i come to make my own product. This sheet will also come in handy as it shows me examples of great, successful companies and their slogan which i could alter to come up with my own.
(will come up with a name later)
Due to the Photoshop version of this advert being deleted, i only have the sketch idea that i did in class.
I created this freakish advert as the famous Apple company use slavery to make their products. Hence why i used the play on words, 'iSlave'. I also altered their slogan to 'Think Slavery' as well as keeping their font for the irony. I decided the use headphones for mimic rope to reference part of their products, also i used a picture of a worker in chains making an Apple product to show the public that Apple have workers that slave away who are underpaid to make their products. I created this advert in hopes that the public will go against it, and will do something about it in the near future.

Video Production
Here are the three locations we used when making our video advert for the energy drink 'Energe.'
We used the backstairs of the college for the second scene where the chaser is chasing Sam up the stairs. After, we used the media room for our last scene where the drink will be presented on a green screen. However, our first scene consists of the outside of college and just outside the entrance. This is where the chase began.
This spider diagram for our advert on as well as the positives and negatives of other popular adverts. This is to help us stick to a plan as it tells us how long the advert has to be for example.
Here are the location recces we used to give us the details of where we filmed. Since we used three areas of college, we had to do three different location recces to give us the details, for example, how bright it is (how the light is produced) and what obstacles we might face. For example, students walking by causing interruption and noise.
This is the health sheet me and my group had to sign to show that we agree to the terms for our own safety.
This is our groups proposal, with this we can clearly present our ideas. It also helps us stick with a plan.
This is the storyboard our group created to help us stick to the plan. It prompted us and gave us guidance so we knew what shot we would use and where.
Evaluation- Video Advert
After looking back at my video advert, i found some of my weaknesses as well as my strengths. There are a lot of obstacles i need to take into consideration whenever i come to make another video advert. As for the original footage, i believe i should spend more time practising holding the camera as i am not so steady. Other than that, i reckon that our group used a good range of camera angles which will most likely grab other peoples attentions as well as be more entertaining to watch. And with help of the effects that we added on later, it tied our advert together and gave it a spooky feel to it.
We first started with what is called a 'skeleton edit.' This is where we get the raw footage and place it in order to watch through to see if our advert made sense. After saving this as a separate file, we began with shortening individual footage with the razor tool to make our advert as near to 30 seconds as possible. With this done, we was ready to add effects.
Using the Adobe Priemeiere software proved somewhat difficult due to its many settings, but i believe after time, i will be able to use it to my advantage as it can come in handy when wanting to make short films, adverts etc.
Though our advert looks pretty decent, it still has a long way to go for it to look like a real, persuasive advert which me and my group should learn from.

My Label
This is the label me and my film group have decided to use. We all contributed to making this on Photoshop by using a background image off of Google. Since this design was made to fit a Lucozade bottle, we kept the price of it which is 99p. We then added the details of a normal Lucozade bottle. Such as the calories and whatnot. We kept all the facts about Lucozade the same apart from the name and background. We all decided on the name 'Energe.' To expand our options in type faces/fonts, we used a website called DaFont to pick out a freaky font for our product. After, we placed that on the top layer on Photoshop and used the magic wand tool to erase the white background it had. In the end we were proud of our design as it was subtle yet caught the eye. It matched the Freaky or Unique theme well.
Nonetheless, we later found out that our measurements did not fit the bottle quite right. I will take this into consideration when creating later products that i should double check the measurements.
Evaluation- Print Advert
In tutorial, i managed to finish off my poster advert for a magazine. Although it didn't turn out exactly how i wanted it to, it shows me my weaknesses and my talents when it comes to Photoshop. Due to me not using my own photography for the background and such, i could not find the right pictures of dripping blood to fully complete my advert. I will keep this in mind when it comes to me making more adverts that i should gather all the images i need before hand, using my own photography. I decided to do the advert portrait as it is a more common way to advertise this way due to magazines being portrait. This also makes it easier for the reader as they wont have to turn the magazine to see the advert.
What I think went well and what didn't
What i think personally went well was my use of Photoshop on the product itself. I was able to edit out the name of the product yet still make the item look convincing. I also thought my ideas for this advert went well. I believe that if i had more time on this advert, i would be able to create something of good quality as well as tie in with the theme of Freaky or Unique. I believe my initial ideas were creative and unique, but due to the time limit and my lack of resources as well as knowledge, i was unable to complete something of high standards. However this will help me achieve something better in the near future as i can look back and see what went wrong and what i was missing so i am able to learn from it.

Montage
I attempted making a montage with the images i took during Photography class. I decided not the make the images subtle first and decided to make them the main focus of the photo as if i was selling something. *However the background image is taken from Google* I used an air brush tool to create a misty, eerie effect around the products to add to the creepy vibe. Also, to make it look as if it is coming out from behind the trees.
Editing Photos
Here are the four images i shot in Photography. I placed each one onto Photoshop and used the Curve tool to change the colour of the backdrop and product. On each one i made the background whiter, and by using the arrow looking icon under the chart that appears, i altered the brightness of the picture so the product its self is clearly visible. Although editing can improve the images, I still need to practice taking photographs as for example, the first photo does not fit the frame. I will consider this next time i come to take photos.
To create a white background, we first needed to create a seamless background. We created this by placing a white piece of paper under the object and a white piece of a paper behind it, but made it come slightly under the product to give it a curve effect. This reduces the chances of having a grey line showing the backdrop and the table. This made it easier for when we edited the photos.
Proposal
In my Photography
class, I took my own picture of cat food I brought from home to use to make an
advert. To do this, I placed the cat food on a white backdrop and shinned a
redhead light onto it to make the product brighter. This redhead light was
placed on a light stand to help support it. I had to make sure not to touch the
redhead as it heats up extremely quickly meaning the bulb could burst easily. I
set up the camera on a trip pod, waited for it to focus on my product then took
multiple pictures from different angles of my product so when I came to edit
it, I would have multiple choices. The name I have chosen for my cat food is ‘Meow
Chow’ and the slogan shall be ‘The cat food to kill for’ to correspond it with
the Freak or Unique theme.
Making my
magazine advert
I will take
the image I took in class and place it into Photoshop, I will then use the
curve tool in order to whiten the background to make it easier to edit out.
Next I will use to wand tool to remove the background leaving just the image of
the cat food. With some help from the images from Google I will be able to
create a magazine advert after looking up the sizes for a standard magazine
page. I will take the background image from Google and edit it to make it
darker and creepier. After, I can gather images of some cat eyes (from Google) and
use the air brush tool to give them a glowing effect in order to make it
freakier. I can then Google images of hands to use for my advert. I will delete
the background using the magic eraser tool and add a black and white effect to
them. By using the air brush tool, I can make the end of where the hand appears
not so sharp in order to make it look as if the hand is coming out of the
darkness. Since I want to lean towards freakier than unique, I can make blood
drip down the stairs then end in a huge puddle at the bottom wear the cat
collar will be placed. Hopefully with the tools I’ve learned to use I can make
a convincing looking advert which will pursued people to buy my product.
However, I need to keep in mind if I cannot take out the camera and if the
redhead light does not work.
Photography Facts

Making an Advert in Photoshop
Today in Photoshop, i started to create my photography advert for a magazine. I Googled the sizes for a standard magazine size which is 8 by 10 then continued to make my advert. I used my own image of the cat food and used the curve tool to make the background pure white so it was easier to delete the background. I then Googled the rest of the images to make my freaky advert. Though it isnt completed yet, i reckon the final design will be unique and of good quality (hopefully). The final design is supposed to have blood dripping down the stairs, then end as a puddle at the bottom where the cat collar is. Above the collar will be the slogan which i have not decided on yet. There is also going to be glowing cat eyes at the top of the stairs and multiple hands outstretching towards the screen with one hand holding the cat food. Above the glowing cat eyes will be the headline of the cat food and possibly a logo. I hope to achieve something of good quality that it looks as if it just came right out of a magazine, though my knowledge for certain tools in Photoshop lacks, i believe i am capable of making an advert that ties in well with the theme.

Library
Today in tutorial we placed our labels onto a new A4 sheet then printed it. The printer was under the name 'CMFD' so our label would come out in colour. This printer can be located in the Library where i can find books to help me later on with my media course. Using my ID card, i can print all the stuff i need in the library for my course. However i only have £2 on my account.
I hope to be borrowing a book from the library in the future as i reckon it can help with my media studies along with my hobbies outside of college, such as drawing.
I hope to be borrowing a book from the library in the future as i reckon it can help with my media studies along with my hobbies outside of college, such as drawing.
Here is one of the books i found in the library that i took a liking to. I particularly like the front cover of this book as its unusual and eye catching. I hope to be taking this book out later in the college year.
Fonts
In class, we looked up some fonts for our product with a
website called DaFont. Here are the nine fonts i chose which i believe fits the Freak or Unique theme. Since we couldn't download them, we screenshotted then pasted the fonts onto Photoshop then used the Marquee tool to crop out the background.
I picked my first font as i think it's easy to read and bold, it will catch the attention of our audience well. However, it does not fit the Freak or Unique theme as well as the others. Though this font is still up for consideration.
As for my second font, it fits the freak theme better than the first, not to mention it is also clear to read so our audience can spot it from a distance and notice it. Though considering other energy drink labels, it doesn't match so our audience might get the wrong idea of what we are selling if we don't show the full product.
The third front i reckon fits the theme best. Though it may be too over the top for our audience and our product may come off as 'dodgy' to them. Other than that, it is easy to read and is very noticeable from a distance.
My fourth image is subtle yet attracting, it barely fits with the freak or unique theme but i believe it will sell the product better than the third image as it looks more professional. Same goes with the fifth image. Although it ties in more with the unique theme, its still lacking some creepy/freaky properties.
In conclusion, i believe that the last four images should be looked at more to see if they need a little more improving. But overall the last four are clear to read, bold and has an eerie feel to them which i reckon will make our product a success.

Photography- Naming the techniques
Leading lines
I believe this photo comes closet to the photography technique 'Leading lines' as the two trams and the crowed of people both work as lines heading towards a certain part of the image. The only thing that's missing from this image is the main focus where the lines will be leading to. Typically, a leading lines photo will have a certain part of the picture acting out as lines, to draw the persons attention to the background of the picture where the main aspect is.
Shallow focus
I reckon this photo could pass off as a shallow focus due to the background looking blurry. The blurriness of the background puts the most interesting part of the picture in focus, making it a shallow focus. I believe the point of this effect is to bring the persons attention to the most important part of the image. This could work well when trying to advertise a product.
Crop
This is an example of a cropped image. It works as a substitute for zooming into an image, as zooming can cause the photo too look blurry, cropping allows the photographer to 'crop out' the unnecessary parts of the photo as well as keeping it at a good quality instead of blurry. This is done after the photo has been taken. The image is then placed on Photoshop, and with the crop tool, cropping the image to the part the photographer wants.
Balance of elements
I picked this photo to represent balance of elements as it shows the three people close to the camera, yet the background makes up the majority of the photo, showing the balance of elements.
Deep focus
Deep focus is where one part of the image is clear, but the entire background is blurred. Like shallow focus, i think this is to show people the most relevant part of the photo, unlike this photo, which is best i could find to fit the description of a deep focus. The deep focus effect on this photo is used to make the image look more attracting in my opinion.
Rule of Thirds
This photo is a good example of the rule of thirds technique, as it clearly shows the main aspect to the side, which is the lady in this case. This technique is used to make the image look more interesting and pleasing to the eye. The use of lines that appear when taking the photo make this technique possible, by setting out guidelines so the photographer knows where to put the most relevant part of the picture.
Symmetry and Pattern
I chose this image as it almost fits in with the symmetry and pattern category. If the turtles were the same colour and in a line, it would show symmetry, as if you cut the image in half, both sides would match up perfectly. It could also possibly fit in with pattern, as the turtles shell pattern is the same on all of the turtles.
Background (out of focus)
This is the closet image i could find to fit the background out of focus photography. This is where the entirety of the background is out of focus and blurry. It can occasionally have something that is in focus close to the camera. As for example, the image above shows the background out of focus yet the girl close to the camera lense is in full focus.
Coming up with a group advert
Our group decided, after planning, to advertise an energy drink. After looking at many different energy drink adverts we decided that the drink should be called 'Energe' and that the slogan should be 'A burst of energy.' We chose the name 'Energe' as it sounds like energy and since the name emerge was already taken, we decided with 'Energe.' We thought that a product name should reference the actual product as much as possible. The slogan 'A burst of energy' references what'll happen in the video. To keep to the freaky theme, we roughly planned out a chase scene which will happen in the advert, in the end the chaser will burst out of a door/window etc with the energy drink. Hence the slogan 'A burst of energy.' Though we haven't decided where the chase will take place or who will be acting what part, we have a pretty clear idea on what will happen throughout the 30 second advert.
Originally, we started with rough food ideas and eventually branched outwards to end up with energy drinks. However, we did not just look at food and drinks, we also took a gander at the clothing adverts as well as every other house old item. (e.g electronics, toys, makeup.) We took the idea from the Phones 4U advert of having someone chase a person which ends up with the chaser trying to sell the product the advert is about which adds a little humour to it. We realised during our research that the adverts with humour tend to be the most popular hence why we chose to add subtle humour in our advert.
We chose to advertise an energy drink as the product its self is easy to transport to class and fairly easy to advertise, we also agreed that it was something that our target audience would want to buy.

Video Groups And Freaky Adverts
In today's session, we got into groups of three for our Freak or Unique advert.
Sam Hart, Dee Amos and me are part of group 1.
Skills:
Dee- Can use a camera fairly well
- Can direct
- Can play the recorder
Sam- Can act fairly well and can play a range of sports.
Me- Can kind of draw and is fairly ok at makeup.
Objects:
Dee- Can provide props
Sam- Can also provide props (maybe costume)
Me- Can provide the costumes
As Dee can direct and use a camera, i feel that it'll be best if he can take notes as well. Since Sam has acting knowledge, he will be the main actor in our advert and will be the one selling the product. As for me, I will help with lighting and taking notes. I can also sketch storyboards to help with the planning.
Freaky Adverts
In our groups, we looked up some freaky (at least considering to us) adverts on YouTube.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erh2ngRZxs0
I think this image would be considered freaky or disturbing as its not your everyday ice cream advert. The fact that the person is eating the ice cream from their head is weird and unusual to me. Though as eye drawing as this advert is, after seeing this it almost puts me off eating the ice cream. I believe this advert is not doing such a good job advertising it as its doing the quite opposite. The simplicity of it also adds to its creepiness as the plain black background really makes the person covered in ice cream bold though i don't think it corresponds with its innocent product name of 'Little Baby's Ice Cream' Therefore, altogether i don't see this advert to be a success. This advert uses a medium close up shot throughout which could eventually get boring to the eye, but due to the weird actor/actress in the centre of the screen your eyes are fixed to it as you want to see what its actually advertising. The music used in this is also quite creepy. This will help us in the future as it'll give us an idea on how you can advertise by using simple props.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2oL_gXECtg
The reason why me and my group found this advert a little off putting and freaky is because its not your normal everyday phone advert, however it does use a cliche horror character (the little girl) which adds a little comedy to the advert. The use of camera angles suggests to the audience that it might be a new horror film which draws you to it, however in the end it is just the girl trying to sell the woman a phone. The use of this will get the audience to look at who published the advert (in this case Phones 4U) which could boost sales as it will be more likely for people to remember the company. I feel this advert will be of use to use when we come to make our own as it gives us an idea on which camera angles are best to build up tension.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02eJUk7Mbsg
This advert is particularly my favorite out of the three as it takes one of the most cliche fears and uses it to advertise something as simple as a car. I especially love how the camera angles don't show the full image which makes it eerie as it only shows the cobwebs by using extreme close up angles but then escalated to a car being trapped in a web, all dusty and the car lights flashing which again, added to the creepiness. Also how a huge spider which blended in with the black background comes out of no where and surprises the audience then runs up to the screen but morphs into the car at the end (car from the image) This advert would be a success as it draws in your eyes yet it isn't the normal upbeat looking car advert, it almost spooks you into buying the car.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yovNUABeCrU
This advert is considered scary to some as it doesn't just use ordinary people, it uses puppets at the beginning and at the end. The close up camera angles really show the edgy looks and fear on the people's faces which gives it that creepy vibe to it. Although the advert was not so successful at selling the product and was later taken down, i believe that it is one of the most creepiest adverts out there and would make a great advert around Halloween time. The use of characters in this make it exceptionally creepy. Especially the one named 'The Judderman' (See photo)who i reckon is meant to represent Jack Frost. I love this advert as its unusual, it isnt your typical everyday to day drink/alcohol advert and it only really makes it clear that it is at the end which is one of the reasons why i believed the advert should of been successful.

Recreation freaky images
I personally like this picture as it ties humans and nature together. The way the man is posing tells me he is trying to meditate and be at peace, yet his head is replaced with fire which could connote that in his head, he is not at peace and is quite the opposite. To recreate this photo i will need to use three layers. One for the background, one for the male and one for the fire. I will have to use the wand tool (or pen tool) to neatly select the male and get rid of the background, then i will have to remove his head and replace it with flames/fire the blur tool will help create the background.
I chose to attempt to recreate this photo as it isn't the typical Photoshopped photo. The choice of three of everything makes the picture look strange and unique as most Photoshopped animals have just been duplicated. It is also subtly freaky which is why i like it. To recreate this photo i will need a picture of an animal laying down, and using the marquee tool i can duplicate the ears, eyes and limbs. I can place the background on a different layer and use the blur tool to create the same effect that is in the original photo.
I would like to recreate this photo as it is subtly freaky and unique compared to the average Photoshopped image. I also find it freaky as i don't really understand as to why it was made, or what it is supposed to symbioses. Though i like the simplicity of it as it only uses a few images to create something that looks complex. To recreate this image, i will need to gather pictures of multiple fingers and one hand. Though the images of the birds can be drawn. I can use the air brush to create the shadows of the fingers and the hand to make it seem more realistic. I will need to add effects later on to the background to give it an eerie affect.
I believe this image will be enjoyable to recreate as it only requires two images to create something this distinctive. The hidden meaning might be that even though he is covering his mouth, he wants to yell, probably to get a lot of tension off him. Or this image could of just been made just for the fun of making it. For me to recreate this image i will need to use the marquee tool to select the nose and mouth and place them on a layer on top of the original image. With the help of an air brush tool, i can blend the nose and mouth into the hand easily.
I find this image quite abnormal as not just the pig head is creepy, but the actual human model is quite scuffed up and rather skinny so the bones are noticeable beneath the skin. To recreate this image will be difficult, though instead of getting a model to match the model in the picture exactly, i could play around with the effects and tools to try and create the same visual effect with Photoshop. I can place the human image onto a plain black layer and edit the pigs head onto a different layer above the human model one. I can then use effects to give the pigs head a sort of grubby effect.
I thought this image is eye catching as its unusual but not impossible to do. All i need is a picture of someone's feet, edit out the ankles/legs with the eraser tool or the magic wand tool, and edit a picture of the top part of some shoes onto the feet by using different layers. I can use the eraser tool around the edges to make the corners more smoother to give off the impression that they are actually attached to the feet. The background can be later added on a separate layer under the other two. However, i cant fathom as to why the image was made or what its trying to portray.
I would adore to recreate this image as its subtly creepy. I personally think the image is beautiful yet it would prove a challenge to recreate. I will need to get a model to pose in the exact same way, then with a another layer, take a singular picture of a tree branch and edit it onto a layer on top. I can duplicate and flip the same image and add the effects after to blend the branches in with the skin. After im happy with the way the image looks, i can add a black and white effect to every layer. Though the meaning of the picture is unclear to me, it still makes a nice piece of work.
I find this picture to be daunting which is why i think it would be great to recreate as it would fit the theme 'Freaky or Unique' perfectly! I especially like how they put something unusual onto what seems to be a perfectly normal background. As much as i love this picture, to recreate it will be difficult. I would need to separate models to get on their knees and take individual shots of them. Then on different layers, i will somehow have to morph their backs into each other, but not without erasing the unnecessary parts first. After, i will need to add a simple black and white effect to the layers.
This picture is quite alarming and strange which is why i like it, i feel it will tie in to the theme well as well. Though it is only made up of two photos, it still gives off an abnormal vibe. I can create this image by using the same model. I just need two layers where i can place the hand on the top layer and edit or erase the not needed parts (e.g the arm) then place it so it looks as if the hand is emerging out her mouth. I can later use special effects to give her skin a gritty, dirt look as well as using an air brush to add a shadow effect where the hand is hovering over.

Using Adobe Priemiere
Today we used different camera angels to add more affect to our videos. For example, we used a panning shot, a tilt shot and a moving painting shot. We also got introduced to jib shot but did not get the chance to try it ourselves.
By using Adobe Priemiere, i can edit the videos i took as you can see in the picture below. The left hand picture being the original video, and the right hand being the edited version. I also learned a few tools i can use using this software. For example i can change where the video starts and ends by trimming it, and i can use a tool to make it more accurate as it shows the video frame by frame/every second. This will come in handy when making my advert with my group as the videos we take may need to be cut down as our advert as to be only 30 seconds long. However, there is still a lot i need to learn about using this software as we didn't have the time to go into full detail about the various tools we can use to our advantage.
